چکیده

Recall that an effective circle action is semifree if the stabilizer subgroup of each point is connected. We show that if (M,ω) is a coadjoint orbit of a compact Lie group G then every element of π1(G) may be represented by a semifree S-action. A theorem of McDuff– Slimowitz then implies that π1(G) injects into π1(Ham(M,ω)), which answers a question raised by Weinstein. We also show that a circle action on a manifold M which is semifree near a fixed point x cannot contract in a compact Lie subgroup G of the diffeomorphism group unless the action is reversed by an element of G that fixes the point x. Similarly, if a circle acts in a Hamiltonian fashion on a manifold (M,ω) and the stabilizer of every point has at most two components, then the circle cannot contract in a compact Lie subgroup of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphism unless the circle is reversed by an element of G

On Semifree Symplectic Circle Actions with Isolated Fixed Points

Let M be a symplectic manifold, equipped with a semifree symplectic circle action with a finite, nonempty fixed point set. We show that the circle action must be Hamiltonian, and M must have the equivariant cohomology and Chern classes of (P ).

Semifree Symplectic Circle Actions on 4-orbifolds

A theorem of Tolman and Weitsman states that all symplectic semifree circle actions with isolated fixed points on compact symplectic manifolds must be Hamiltonian and have the same equivariant cohomology and Chern classes of (CP 1)n equipped with the standard diagonal circle action. In this paper, we show that the situation is much different when we consider compact symplectic orbifolds. Focusi...

Cyclic group actions on manifolds from deformations of rational homotopy types

This paper nishes the series 12, 16, 17] of papers that aim to show the existence of non-trivial group actions (\symmetries") on certain classes of manifolds. More speciically, we ask whether there is a semifree smooth action of the circle group T = S 1 { resp., a non-trivial action of a cyclic group Z=p; p a prime { on a given manifold X with a xed point set of a given rational homotopy type F...

Differentiable Actions on 2 « - Spheres

Introduction. It is shown in [4] that there is an infinite family of semifree Zm actions on odd dimensional homotopy spheres. There is also an infinite family of semifree S actions on odd dimensional homotopy spheres (see [2], [5]). On the other hand, it is announced in [2] that there are only finitely many inequivalent semifree S actions on even dimensional homotopy spheres. Hence it is intere...

Differentiable Classification of Some Topologically Linear Actions

Let G act smoothly on S with fixed point set diffeomorphic to S O^kt^n — 3, and with all other orbits of the same type and of dimension r. Connell, Montgomery and Yang have shown that the action of G is topologically equivalent to a linear action of S if n —r^5. The problem then arises as to what can be said about the differentiable classification of these topologically linear actions. In some ...
